I ordered my computer this morning. As far as programs go, it'll show up with Windows 7, WoW and Steam on it and that's about it. I hate Symmantec/Norton so I opted to not get the "free" trial of those.
I currently use AVG. Now that they have a paid version of AVG, I feel that the free version doesn't do a whole lot.
What I'm looking for is antivirus and spyware software that is free, updated frequently and promtly and runs reliable, efficiently, and unnoticeably in the background. If there's nothing like that, that is free, something with a reasonable one-time fee would be nice.
I know there's a lot of you out there that don't use Norton?symmantec, so please help me! Thanks in advance!

nod32 isn't free, but it's hella cheap and super lightweight.

Windows Security Essentials is a good start and has surprisingly good coverage from the test reports so far. It's also FREE.

I currently run ESet on the 4 systems I have and like it. I'm thinking of looking at Avast! though because I'm planning on getting a Windows Home Server (Avast! is the only one I've seen so far that has a WHS version, and it will also poll the networked systems to verify they are up to date).
I have installed Windows Security Essentials on a few machines...it was pretty darn nice...so much so I 'almost' converted one of my home systems to it. And FREE is always a good price. Particularly for a program that does as well as WSE does in the performance testing.
I watch AV-Comparatives to keep up on virus progs current offerings and how they perform.

| I might have to give Windows Security Essentials a try. That's what you use, Lym? That covers virus and spyware as well?

I'm with Goslx, Avast is my free AV of choice. It was rated number two, above AVG, for all free AV products and has a very reasonable CPU usage compared to Nortonsuck and some of the others.
Spyware Search and Destroy is my Spyware pick of choice for freebies. MBAM is pretty good too, between those two I normally pick up anything nasty and remove it.
